Lucca is most famous for their walls surrounding their city. The walls show the characteristics of four stages of construction that correspond with four different periods of construction. The first period, of which few traces remain today, are of the ancient roman walls. The second period was during the 11th and 12th centuries when the first medieval walls were built but weren’t completed till the middle of the 13th century. The third period was because of urban expansion and was an expansion of the walls during the 14th and 15th century. The last construction period was during the 16th and 17th centuries and was a striking example of military science at the time and was built to keep up with the Medici and their policy of expansion. The last upgrade to their walls included ramparts joined by curtains for a total length of over four kilometers. Turrets were built at the four corners of the wall, and on each rampart a casermetta was built to house guards. The last addition to the wall was commissioned by Duchess Maria Luisa of Bourbon to arrange the walls as a walkway which still serve today as a favorite walkway for locals and tourists alike.
