The Eiffel Tower was built in 1889 and was named after its creator Gustave Eiffel. From 1889 until 1930 it was the world’s tallest man-made structure; it is also the most visited paid entrance-tourist attraction in the world. It is one of the world’s most recognizable structures and is a symbol of Paris itself. It was originally built as a gateway to the Paris Universal Exhibition, marking the centenary of the French Revolution in 1789. It was put on a 20 year lease and in 1909 it should have been dismantled but by then it had become a symbol of the city and the Paris City Hall decided to keep it up. The tower was built from 7,300 tons of pig iron and the goal of Gustave Eiffel for making the tower was for it to be like no other structure built before. But there were critics who said that the wind would tip the tower over but even in extreme winds the tower only moves about 7 centimeters, in fact the tower moves more because of summer sunshine’s effect on the metal. The Eiffel Tower has three different levels, the first two can be reached by the stairs but the top level is only accessible by elevator.
