Behind the Pitti Palace are the beautiful Boboli Gardens. They were originally designed for the Medici and are one of the earliest examples of an Italian Garden which later inspired many other European courts gardens. The gardens cover a vast area forming a giant open-air museum. The gardens contain antique and Renaissance statues, grottoes and large fountains. It has numerous and varied walks throughout the gardens which can evoke a feeling of a life at court. In 1550 the Medici bought the Pitti Palace along with the Boboli gardens behind the palace. The name of the gardens is thought to have come from the previous owner of the palace. Nicolo Pericoli was called in to transform the area into one of the most spectacular Renaissance gardens ever created. Nicolo worked on the project until he died. But with the intervention by famous artists like Buontalenti, Michelangelo, and Giambologna Boboli became a model for what a European royal garden should look like, most notably the Palace of Versailles gardens were influenced by the Boboli gardens. There are many sites to see in the Boboli gardens including the large cave, amphitheater, the basin, the island tank, and the flowers and citrus fruit trees.
